Sony Ericsson K850i

April 27, 2009

Sony Ericsson K850i

The Sony Ericsson K850i has a gorgeous display, a wide range of features, and desirable sound quality. It’s also a fantastic camera phone with outstanding photo quality. The Sony Ericsson K850i’s navigation array and touch controls take a little getting used to. Also, the keypad buttons are rather small.

Though its navigation controls and keypad aren’t up to par, the Sony Ericsson K850i is one of the finest camera phones we’ve seen.Like most Sony Ericsson handsets, the K850i has a standard candy bar design. With its sleek black hue and green highlights, it’s eye-catching without being ostentatious. At 4 inches by 1.9 inches by 0.7 inch, it has an average size though it’s a bit weighty at 4.2 ounces. Sony Ericsson always does a good job with its displays, and the K850i is no exception. The 2.25-inch (320×240 pixels) screen supports a bright 262,144 colors. It shows everything well, from graphics to photos and text, and the menus are simple and easy to use. You can adjust the clock size and the brightness, but no other options are customizable.

Sony Ericsson excels at a lot of things, but cell phone design isn’t always the company’s strong point. It’s not that its phones are ugly (most of the time they’re quite pretty), but controls tend be too stylish for their own good. The K850i has the same problem; it’s stylish and sharp, but we found its navigation array and camera controls not so easy to use. But before we get there, let’s address the good stuff first.

Sony Ericsson W760a

April 27, 2009

Sony Ericsson W760a

With so many new phones constantly coming onto the market, some models seem to rely on flashiness to capture consumers’ attention. Not so with the Sony Ericsson W760a, a slider Walkman handset that feels well made and solid enough to continue providing high quality music, photos and communication while other phones come and go.

The W760a is the first global Walkman phone with tri-band HSDPA and many reviewers have found it to be a marked improvement over previous Sony Ericsson Walkman phones. This phone is designed to appeal to music lovers and gamers and despite its sleek, grown up look, there are a lot of special features packed inside.

These include the shake control to shuffle music tracks, fast forward and adjust volume, and an accelerometer that allows users to navigate certain games by tilting the phone in various directions. The W760a can switch to landscape mode with the slider closed while music and gaming applications are open, which makes it similar to the iPhone in one respect, although there is no touch screen here.

Sony Ericsson TM506

April 27, 2009

Sony Ericsson TM506

The TM506 is unobtrusive and slim enough to slip easily into a pocket or small purse, at only 0.7 inches thick. Images on the internal display are colorful and bright, while unfortunately the external display is monochrome and displays time and the phone numbers of callers, but not photo identification.

Beneath the basic design of the TM506, Sony Ericsson and T-Mobile have still found room for plenty of features, including a camera with a wealth of editing options and a functional music player. Photos from the 2.0-megapixel camera, which puts it in the middle ranks of Sony Ericsson camera phones, were clear, detailed and usually reproduced colors well, but it was somewhat unreliable. Sometimes photos and video taken indoors came out normal, and sometimes they were too dark.

This clamshell phone is small and lightweight, at 3.4 ounces. It is 3.7 inches tall, 1.9 inches wide and 0.7 inches thick. The TM506 comes in two color schemes, amber and emerald, and the amber model is the one reviewed here. The emerald design has green details on the keypad, hinge and other areas, whereas the amber version has a mix of silver and orange details.
